SANDY KILPATRICK

ARTIST REFLECTION

My mind oscillates, on an hourly basis, between my creative work, the struggles to make a decent living as an artist, remembering snippets of songs that I love, feeling the blessing of being on this wonderful planet (inspired by the beauty to make songs) - and waves of anxiety at the looming climate collapse. I know I’m not alone in this frenetic oscillation, and I know that the list is longer - we have to juggle a lot in this crazy wee Century.

I often yearn for the wonder of my Scottish childhood, for the time when I was a boy and the natural world around East Kilbride meant everything to me - the innocence of wandering through the fields, the freedom of climbing trees and running after my Jack Russell terrier Glen, as he chased another rabbit down a hole. It’s a period of life I think of as being defined by ‘being’, rather than doing. It really was enough to be exactly who you were, wherever you were in the world - innocent and free.

Now I find inspiration in the wildlife of our precious Portuguese valley - in the playful call of the morning crows, in the arrival of the hoopoes in Spring, in the call of the midwife toads at midnight. It’s a reminder that in the midst of the devastation and horror we face, there is simultaneously an abundance of beauty and joy. In our best moments we are connected to this miracle of life. My creative work is a dance with all of this.

Sandy Kilpatrick walking along reflective shoreline

Sandy Kilpatrick is a Scottish singer-songwriter and storyteller whose work is deeply shaped by landscape, memory, and a lifelong exploration of music as a spiritual practice. For more than twenty-five years, he has developed a distinctive voice that blends folk tradition with emotional depth, poetic lyricism, and a deep reverence for Nature.

Born in East Kilbride and raised within Glasgow’s vibrant music scene, Sandy began his career in Manchester as the frontman of the cult band Sleepwalker, sharing creative circles with artists such as Elbow. In 2000, he relocated to northern Portugal, where a more contemplative and nature-connected life began to influence his songwriting in profound ways.

His work has been championed by Guy Garvey (BBC Radio 6 Music) and Mark Radcliffe (BBC Radio 2), and praised by publications including Folk & Honey, CLOUT, and Music Crowns. Alongside his solo releases, Sandy has developed multidisciplinary projects such as Terras Últimas, and continues to expand his creative world through Songs From The Wild — a body of work spanning music, podcasting, and retreats.

His forthcoming album, Illuminations, draws inspiration from the Norwegian coastline, exploring themes of light, presence, and the inner landscape.
